WAT PHRA THAT HARIPHUNCHAI
( Lamphun )

This ancient monastery was founded in the 9th century on the riverside of a royal palace. Its great wihan (chapel) is noted for woodcarving, pulpit, and a large Lanna or ChiangSaen Buddha image. The most sacred monument in the compound is the admirable Lanna chedi with a stepped base and rigned bell-shaped body, topped by a nine-tier umbrella of pure gold. This original chedi of the 9th Century has been enlarged and remodeled over the centuries. There is an open pavilion displaying a huge gong cast in 1860, alleged to be the largest in the world.
